Book Review: Bradley Jersak's "A More Christlike Word: Reading Scripture The Emmaus Way"
I thoroughly enjoyed Jersak's book, "A More Christlike Word." I had heard of the author through means (podcasts and other author's books) but I had not read anything by him prior to reading this book. The book covers an important topic for those going through any kind of deconstruction of faith, as Jersak opens the Bible up far beyond the limitations of the view of the Bible as inerrant and infallible. From the beginning of the book where Jersak reminds his readers that Jesus is the "Word" described in the Bible, not the Bible itself to the conclusion where he notes that biblical authors used literary devices like rhetoric, phenomenology, and anthropomorphism, each of his chapters brings about their own "A HA!" moments that just make sense.
Jersak's goal in writing the book was to provide his readers with a greater sense of the Bible, one that survives any concept of faith that incorporates logic (and can we say "our brains?") I definitely feel like this book is one I will continue to visit and revisit moving forward, as the subjects he touches on are ones we as Christians should constantly engage and be challenged with.
